It’s adorable and sentimental, but it also accumulates into messy piles up at the end of each school year. I have outlined some tips to manage the clutter and keep your children’s artwork clutter-free and organized.

At the beginning of each school year:

Start by setting up one box for each of your children. Try an 11×17 box to accommodate the larger scale pieces. As your children bring artwork home, display their favorites and store the rest in their individually labeled art boxes.

To display the artwork try one of these options:

  • Attach simple cork boards to the walls so you can easily change the artwork displayed. This allows you to hold a rotating art show to show off your kid’s latest and greatest work!
  • Hang a piece of string from the wall and clip art to it using cute clothes pins.

Edit the collection. As you remove the old artwork and replace them with the new pieces for your display, decide (with your children) which items will be stored in their box and which will be discarded.

At the end of each school year:

Edit again. The art box you created and labeled at the beginning of the year is likely overflowing at this point. Go through the stack with your child and try to edit it down to your 5-10 favorites. Keep these favorites stored i art storage box you already created. Don’t forget to make a separate box for each child every year.

Before you recycle the artwork you’ve chosen not to keep, photograph each item against a black poster board. Then make a photo book of the images so you never truly have to part with them! You can reproduce photo books as many times as you want.

Share the love and the collection – these photo books make great gifts for grandparents or godparents!
